早在20世紀30年代，德國人就熱衷於半履帶式車的研製，先後研製出1t、3t、8t、12t、18t、24t等多種型號的半履帶式車輛，並以hk系列命名。其中，小型的半履帶式車命名為hk100型，由兵器局第6科負責研製，目的是開發一種能空運的半履帶式車輛。研製工作於1939年開始。在研製過程中，參考了奧地利的輕型半履帶式車輛，研製工作進展很快，1940年初就製成了樣車，年內共製成了70輛試生產型車，並進行了廣泛試驗。1941年共生產了420輛，第一輛車於1941年6月5日正式裝備德軍，1942年共生產了985輛；1943年生產了2450輛；1944年共生產了4490輛。研製之初的代號為kfz.620，定型後命名為sdkfz.2特種車輛。德文名為kettenlirad，意思是“履帶式摩托車”。

[b]sdkfz.2/1和2/2型野戰電話線敷設車[/b]2/1和2/2型都叫“野戰電話線敷設車”。有時為了區分，也稱後者為“sdkfz.2/2型野戰重型電話線敷設車”。兩車的共同特點是，在發動機罩的上方焊上一個支架，裝上捲筒式電話線電纜，但後者的支架尺寸較大，可以裝大型電纜；車體後部掛裝一個兩輪拖車，同樣裝一套捲筒式電話線電纜。其中，2/-t1型只生產了幾輛，2/2型的生產數量稍多些，但也很有限。所以，留下來的sdkfz.2/2型的照片顯得十分珍貴。
[b]五乘員組履帶式摩托車[/b]1944年至1945年研製，其特點是將車體後部加長，發動機的功率加大，使後部車廂能乘坐4名乘員。不過，該車只製成一輛樣車，未能批量生產，連一張照片也未能留下。
